Perhaps you have decided to investigate the possibility of becoming a hypnotherapist. You enjoy working with people and love to help others solve problems and improve their life in some way. You’ve read some on the subject and believe hypnosis work as a profession would be the ideal career for you. The next step is the education. There are a variety of training options available to someone wishing to become a hypnotherapist and they range widely in the scope and depth of education they offer. In this article we will look at the most common ways to learn hypnosis as a profession.

Books
All over the internet and in many book stores you will find books about hypnosis and how to hypnotize someone. Good books can be very helpful in helping you understand generalities about the subject of hypnosis and it’s practical applications. Such books can also be a good resource for hypnosis induction techniques for the practicing hypnotherapist. Since hypnosis involves the viewing and interpretation of various visual cues books alone are inadequate for learning the nuances of hypnosis.

Video Courses
It is possible to purchase video training to learn hypnosis by distance learning. While some of these courses are too shallow to provide sufficient training for someone wishing to make a career as a hypnotist, others are exceptionally good. The best video courses will include demonstrations of hypnosis being done with actual clients. Often providers of such courses will grant access to an instructor to answer questions and give assistance as needed.

Seminars
Some trainers offer weekend hypnosis seminars. Over the course of 3 days they teach the basics of hypnosis in a large hall or classroom. It is not unusual for professionals such as doctors, psychologists and social workers to receive their training in this manner. While one weekend certainly does not make someone an expert one can receive enough basic knowledge of hypnosis to conduct a simple hypnosis session. This type of training seems most suited to those who wish to acquire a general understanding of how hypnosis works rather than those desiring to become practicing hypnotherapist. One advantage to live seminars however is that participants get the opportunity to learn and practice at least one hypnotic induction live.

Classroom Instruction
Many hypnosis instructors have facilities where students can attend live training over a period of several weeks or even months. In fact some have gone on to establish hypnosis schools with multiple instructors and classes. In classroom training students learn and practice a number of inductions and techniques and are instructed how to apply hypnosis to a variety of issues clients may present them with. Some instructors are incredibly gifted teachers who have established a legacy of capable graduates. Others, not so much. As with any education the quality of training has much to do with the competence of the teacher. Instructor and peer interaction, as well as practice ‘labs’ are probably the biggest pluses to classroom training.

Mentoring
In years past many hypnotists learned their profession solely from personal mentors. Though not as common these days occasionally one can still find an experienced master to teach and guide them in the art of hypnotherapy. While most professional organizations will not recognize such informal training for membership there are numerous benefits of such an education. Not only will the student learn the technical aspects of hypnosis work, he/she will also benefit from the wisdom and experience of a well practiced ‘sage’. Mentors are particularly useful for someone who has completed video or seminar training as the mentor can act as a ‘coach’ to sharpen ones skills and catch and correct errant practices. Some on-site schools offer internships which act much like mentoring programs.

You can see there are a variety of means to learn hypnosis or become a professional hypnotherapist. Many municipalities do not require any specific training or experience to open a hypnosis practice. Even hypnosis organization (and there are many) vary in the training requirements of their members. Typically hypnosis clients seldom inquire about their hypnotists training or credentials. So the choice for which type of training and how much may ultimately be up to you according to your conscience and your confidence level. Just be sure to do everything you must to be the best you can be for your clients. After all, helping people is what being a hypnotherapist is all about.
